A briefe and easye instru[c]tion to learne the tablature…… は、EEBOやプライベートサイト、Scribdから入手可能だが、どれも実体は同じもの様にみえる。
まず、このファクシミリはこのまま使うには、以下の点でその品質の悪さが障害となる。
1. 誤植
誤文字、位置ずれ、活字が上下逆さま、置き忘れ、コース違い
音価記号（旗）の並行ずれ、誤付点
2. ノイズ（画像品質）
オリジナル曲集の紙質とインク、または、保管状態に起因すると思われるが、裏面の印刷内容が透けて見えている。ただ、裏抜けしたものは表面にと比べて淡いので、たいして判別には問題にはならないが、このファクシミリはマイクロフィルム用に撮影した画像を単純にモノクロ2値化してしまっているので、裏抜けしたものが表面と同じ濃さとなって判読を困難とするページがいくつか存在する。
ということで、このファクシミリの原典、または、この英訳版の元となったフランス語版を探してみた。
Matthew Spring1)によれば、この曲集（教本）はエリザベス1世の治世期（1558 - 1603）にイギリスに紹介するためにフランス語から英語に翻訳されているが、作曲者名が書かれていない。そして、この曲集は唯一、British Library に残されているとあるので、検索してみたが、Reading Roomのコンピュータでのみ閲覧可能とのこと。また、後に追加版として3つ曲集が出版された。これらには作曲者名が明記されている。
Book1 : A Briefe and Plaine Instruction to Set All Musicke of Eight Diuers Tunes in Tableture for the Lute. All First Written in French by Adrian Le Roy. 1574.
Book2 : A Briefe Instruction how to play on the Lute by Tablature, to conduct and dispose thy hand unto the Lute, with certaine easie lessons for that purpose. 1568.
Book3 : The thirde book for the lute conteining diuerfe Psalmes and many fine excellent Tunes which follows the English translation of Le Roy's Instruction . . . for the lute published in London in 1574.
上記3冊は合本されて出版されている（Eebo Editions, Proquest, 2010/7/13）。Book2はA briefe and easye instru[c]tion to learne the tablature…… の前半部分と内容は同じであるが、印字品質の悪さはA briefe and easye instru[c]tion to learne the tablature……と同じである。
幸運にも、3冊の合本と全く同一内容のファクシミリがBNF - Gallicaで閲覧できる。こちらの方はカラー画像なので濃淡があり、裏抜けしてはいるが読み取りやすい。
A briefe and easye instru[c]tion to learne the tablature……が出版された1568以前としてはAdrian Le Roy とRobert I Ballardは1551 ～1567年の間に10冊のリュート曲集を出版している2)。この中のどれかが英訳されたと考えられる。
なお、以下の3冊の存在は確認できるが、どれも英訳の元となった曲集ではない。
I. Premier livre de tabulature de luth, contenant plusieurs Motetz, Chansons, Fantasies, Pauanes, Gaillardes, Almandes, Branles, tant simples qu'autres: Le tout composé Par Le Roy, Adrian. Table, Paris, 1551.
II. Tiers livre de tabulature de luth, CONtenant vingt & vn Pseaulmes, Le tout mis selon le subiet par Le Roy, Adrian. - Paris, 1552.
III. SIXIESME LIVRE DE LVTH, CONTENANT PLVsieurs chansons nouuellement mises en Tabulature / PAR Le Roy, Adrian. .... Paris, 1559.
1568年以降ではあるが、1571年に以下が出版され現存している2)。
Livre d'air de cours miz sur le luth. Paris: l'Auteur & Robert Ballard, 1571.
Matthew Spring1)を読み進めると、Le Roy の最初のリュート教本は
Breve et facile instruction pour apprendre la tablature, à bien accorder, conduire et disposer la main sur Luth published in Paris, 1567.
であり、おそらく、これが、A briefe and easye instru[c]tion to learne the tablature…… の元となった曲集であろう。残念ながらこの曲集は失われている。色々探しても見つからなかった理由はこれだろう。
ということで、幾つかのページについては、画像編集ソフトを使って修正してみた。
